Energy management in intralogistics

Energy plays a major role in all areas of a company. Intralogistics in particular offers countless opportunities for optimizing the energy balance. Intelligent energy management prevents unnecessary consumption. Well thought-out charging systems and charging strategies, intelligent warehouse planning and forward-looking battery technology make your fleet the consumption champion.

Energy management

Intelligent energy management takes a holistic view of all energy sources and also the vehicles and routes that consume energy. How do we deal with energy ? Do we use energy cost-efficiently and how can we achieve more with less energy?

Loading strategy

The more battery-powered vehicles a fleet has and the larger the operation, the more worthwhile it is to develop smart charging strategies. When is the optimal time to change a forklift battery? What does the perfect charging cycle look like? What type of battery is best suited for my application? A charging strategy analysis clarifies these and other questions.

There is enormous energy-saving potential in the optimization of routes and processes, as well as in intelligent warehouse planning and design. Let our experts advise you.

Choosing the right energy system

The choice of the right energy system is one of the essential questions of energy management. The focus here is on the total cost of ownership, which is made up of the acquisition costs, operating costs and energy costs of the vehicles. Depending on the application, it may make sense to implement a different energy system. Important factors for this decision are the space required for refueling or recharging, energy costs, and environmental compatibility. The preferred energy systems here are internal combustion engines, lead-acid batteries, lithium-ion batteries and fuel cells.

No matter which energy system you choose, GRUMA offers you a large product portfolio with the latest technology. Simply make an appointment and let our experts advise you.

Internal combustion engine

Whether diesel engine or gas drive with fuel or natural gas. Internal combustion engines have proven their worth in intralogistics. However, while fuel and natural gas vehicles are mainly used indoors, diesel engines tend to be used outdoors. The advantages of combustion engines are obvious. Thanks to their high ground clearance, they can even be used on uneven ground.

In addition, their low-noise and economical engines with simultaneous powerful engine performance and the load capacity of up to 18 tons should be emphasized. Internal combustion engines can be in operation for many hours and convince with long service intervals and simple maintenance processes.

Lead-acid batteries

Lead-acid batteries are particularly suitable for indoor use in light to medium-duty applications where the vehicle is only needed for a few hours during the day. Multi-shift operation is possible, but battery replacement usually has to be scheduled here. With electric forklifts, you have five different options and are somewhat more flexible than with forklifts with combustion engines.

Optionally, you can also order the vehicle with an integrated charger. Simply select the right one for your application from our variety of different battery capacities and chargers. The investment costs are almost identical for V- and E-trucks with lead-acid batteries.

Lithium-ion batteries

The lithium-ion technology is particularly suitable for demanding, intensive and sensitive work areas, such as in multi-shift operation, in cold storage or in the pharmaceutical, beverage or food industries. Compared to the lead-acid battery, lithium-ion technology has several advantages. For example, the intermediate charging capability eliminates the need for costly and time-consuming battery changes. In addition, energy costs are lower because the combination of lithium-ion battery and charger results in an overall efficiency that is up to 30 percent higher than that of the lead-acid battery.

You also save on the battery charging room and a venting concept, as battery gases no longer escape. To meet the different application areas, you can get our batteries in various battery capacities with different charging powers.

Fuel cells

Fuel cells are an interesting alternative to lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries thanks to their numerous advantages. On the one hand, the infrastructure for hydrogen refueling can be implemented in a very space-saving manner, and on the other hand, the purchase of hydrogen has become significantly cheaper in recent years, which in turn benefits operating costs.

Furthermore, the short refueling times and the elimination of time-consuming battery changes speak in favor of this energy system. Thanks to their high availability, vehicles powered by fuel cells can be used in multi-shift operation. In the fuel cell, hydrogen and oxygen react to produce electricity, heat and water. Refueling the vehicles with hydrogen takes only one to three minutes.
